Description

Next-Generation Sequencing in Latin America

This report is an examination of the use of DNA sequencing systems in the Latin American region, based on a survey conducted in Fall 2013 by VA Consultadoros. The survey centered on instrumentation, with a goal of providing a complete count of next-generation sequencing (NGS) systems sold to customers in the major countries of Latin American.

For the healthcare industry, Latin America is a focus. The region went through its highest economic growth period in the last four decades during 2000-2010. This growth brought almost a third of the total population in the region into middle class status — with around 70 percent of these residing in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. This economic development has brought investment in these nation’s healthcare systems, which in turn has increased the focus on high-end biotechnology instrument expenditures for diagnostics and clinical research.

Genomics studies product cycle with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology in Latin America (LatAm) is in its exponential phase and industry growth is greater than the regional investment in Science and Technology (S&T) compared against the expenditure in S&T as a percentage of GDP. Because of that it is necessary to acquire more information regarding the business dynamics, products/applications segmentation and main purchase drivers.

The report contains the following information as part of its coverage:

Number of NGS systems installed by country:

  • Brazil
  • Mexico
  • Argentina
  • Chile
  • Columbia
  • Others

Brands of NGS systems Installed In the countries of Latin America, cross-referenced by country:

  • Roche
  • Illumina
  • Life
  • Others

Economic statistical information for the countries of Latin America

Scientific and technical expenditures for the countries of Latin America

NGS systems by throughput category

The survey was done by interviewing distributors with local or regional presence, opinion leaders, manufacturers of systems and reagents for the life sciences industry segment, research institutes and tender’s calls. Twenty two interviews were performed that enabled data gathering about eight countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay) during the period June/September 2013.

This industry survey and assessment yields data regarding geographical distribution, lab category distribution, manufacturer’s analysis, instrument distribution by throughput category and industry trends for the years ahead. As part of its coverage, applications were not in the scope of this study.

The report is a collaboration between VA Consultora y Asociados and Kalorama Information. VA Consultora y Asociados is a consulting company founded and directed by Dr. María Victoria Allais, who has more than 20 years in the IVD industry and its many segments. Internal knowledge and expertise lead to real time intelligence on the diagnostic opportunity including new technologies and forecasting. In-depth qualitative and quantitative research focused on the Latin American region as well as on country-specific trends. More information is available at: www.vaconsultora.com.ar.
